This is why requirements engineering is playing an increasingly important role in product development in both the software and hardware sectors. Christian Bock is Lead Requirements Engineer at Materna Virtual Solution and uses his expertise to ensure that the products are further developed in a targeted manner. In the following interview, Christian explains what requirements engineering is and what his work as a requirements engineer looks like.

Editorial Office: Dear Christian, you joined MVS around five months ago and have been enriching our specialist departments with your expertise as Lead Requirements Engineer ever since. Can you please briefly introduce yourself and tell us how you came to work in requirements engineering?

Christian Bock: My name is Christian Bock, I am 27 years old and was born and raised in Nuremberg. I originally got into requirements engineering by chance – but looking back, I would describe it more as luck 😉 But let me try to tell you the story in a nutshell: I was a dual student of electrical engineering at the time and already suspected that I wouldn’t be working in this field my whole life. One day, a friend told me about a job fair where various companies were looking for young professionals interested in internships, apprenticeships and dual study programs. Although I wasn’t looking for a new job yet, I was a good friend and accompanied him as moral support. When we got there, we were approached directly by one of the companies. It was a consulting company from Nuremberg that specialized in this strange topic called requirements engineering. I had never heard of it before, but was very intrigued by what they had to say. After the interview, I looked at their brochures and did some more research on requirements engineering. What can I say? I was convinced! So I applied to this very company and was offered an apprenticeship as an IT specialist for application development. I was so fascinated by requirements engineering right from the start that I was ready to quit my job and still work in requirements engineering today. After about 8 years as a (senior) consultant and trainer in various industries – automotive, healthcare, industrial automation, insurance, mechanical engineering, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, to name but a few – I decided to leave the consulting industry and joined the product management team at Materna Virtual Solution. I am very happy to be part of MVS and to be able to help shape the future of safe ultra-mobile working.

Editorial Office: Thank you Christian for sharing your story with us! Sometimes things like this just happen by fate. 🙂 Can you please explain to us what requirements engineering is all about and what typical tasks you deal with as a requirements engineer?

Christian Bock: This is explained quite simply: it is about understanding the needs and wishes of customers/users so that the development teams can develop products that offer maximum benefit. Basically, requirements engineering is the translator/interface between the company/stakeholders and development. And as we all know: Different people speak different languages. Therefore, in requirements engineering, we need to be able to empathize with people to understand what their requirements/needs are, even if they are not able to describe them – which, by the way, is harder than it sounds. And here a phrase from a former colleague immediately comes to mind: “Give your customers what they need, not what they want!”. And I think that’s a very important sentence, because they usually give you what they want, even if it’s not necessarily what they need. So as a requirements engineer, it’s my job to ask questions to find out what the customer needs, based on the information that was originally given to me. But that’s not all! Requirements engineering involves several main tasks, such as eliciting and gathering requirements and information in general; analyzing and refining requirements to ensure they are complete, coherent and feasible; documenting requirements in a structured way so that they can be used by other parties/stakeholders; validating requirements with stakeholders to ensure they meet their needs and expectations; and last but not least, management issues such as prioritization, change management and release planning.

Editorial Office: That sounds really fascinating. Requirements engineering seems to be a very diverse field in which communicative people are in good hands. Can you please tell us more about the requirements engineering process? What steps does a functional requirement have to go through before it is finally implemented?

Christian Bock: In principle, the requirements engineering process begins with identifying and understanding the desired function or the problem to be solved. To do this, information must be obtained from the stakeholders and their needs clarified. At this point, it is important to emphasize that stakeholders are not only users and/or customers, but basically everyone who is directly and indirectly involved in product development. This means that our target group includes internal parties such as development, sales, marketing, support and quality assurance as well as external parties such as customers, users, partners, device manufacturers and infrastructure providers. Once the requirement has been identified, it is analyzed and broken down into smaller, more manageable parts. This involves identifying functional and non-functional requirements, prioritizing them and eliminating any conflicts or ambiguities. The next step is to document the identified and analyzed requirements in a clear and structured form. It is particularly important to keep the big picture in mind and not get lost in details that may not be relevant in the holistic view. The documented requirements are then validated by discussing them with the parties involved, including the development team, the customer and the users. This step ensures that the requirements are complete, consistent and feasible. Of course, the requirements may change or evolve during the development process. It is then our responsibility to track and manage the changes to ensure they are properly communicated and assessed for their impact. Once the requirements are validated, the development team proceeds with the implementation of the product according to the defined requirements. This includes coding, testing and deploying the solution. After implementation, the final solution is reviewed to ensure that it meets the defined requirements. This is where testing, user acceptance assessments and other verification techniques are used. It is important to note that this is not necessarily a sequential process, but rather an iterative process where the requirements engineer involves various stakeholders at different points throughout the process.

Editorial Office: A really extensive process involving many parties. But as you mentioned, the process is important in order to develop products and solutions in the right direction. Now I would like to know more about the collaboration in your team. What does your collaboration look like and which departments does Requirements Engineering work with?

Christian Bock: First of all, I would like to mention that our collaboration is exceptional and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues for their great and ambitious work! My team consists of three roles – a Product Manager, a Solution Architect and a Requirements Engineer – which I think work incredibly well together. As a rule, our product manager brings new topics to the table and is in close contact with customers, management and other internal stakeholders. These topics are then analyzed by the requirements engineer and broken down into specific requirements in order to obtain a holistic view of the topic. The Solution Architect then comes into play, who derives the technical specification at a high level of abstraction, the system architecture and suggestions/recommendations for the development teams on the technologies to be used. Basically, we work with almost all departments in the company, as they are also stakeholders with individual requirements that we have to take into account. Some examples: We work closely with the development team to communicate and clarify requirements, provide the necessary documentation and ensure a common understanding of the desired outcomes. We support our project management and sales team by clarifying requirements with customers to ensure that expectations can be managed appropriately and that development teams can provide estimates to derive budgets/costs and timelines. As part of the product management team, we also try to ensure that the requirements from the projects can be aligned and prioritized with our product strategy. As our Customer Excellence team is regularly in direct contact with our customers, our colleagues provide us with valuable insights that we can then translate into requirements. When it comes to marketing, we conduct interviews when the team asks us to. Joking aside 😉 For marketing, we try to provide the necessary information so that new features, products and/or projects can be promoted appropriately. To this end, we summarize relevant information in fact sheets that serve as a central source of information throughout the company so that everyone involved can work with the same information.

Editorial Office: You are networked with the entire company, so to speak. That sounds super exciting! And I’m pleased to hear that you work so well together as a team. My last question: Can you tell us about a typical working day as a requirements engineer at Materna Virtual Solution?

Christian Bock: There really is no such thing as a typical working day, but I personally really appreciate that. As you can imagine, every topic is different and requires different contributions from different stakeholders. But I will try to outline a typical day in requirements engineering for you: In the morning, I usually have a short sync meeting with my team to discuss the currently relevant topics. After that, I spend most of my time talking to our stakeholders. I then analyze and document the input received, which I then discuss with our Solution Architect, Product Manager or our Product Owners. But of course there are also days when I simply try to fully understand a topic in order to derive the requirements. Other days are filled with on-site customer workshops, clarifications with our partners or thinking about which features we will deliver with which release cycle. I love my job – especially at MVS! And I can recommend it to anyone who likes to communicate a lot and has strong analytical skills!

Editorial Office: Thank you, Christian, for the open dialog and the interesting insights into your field of work. You really do a great job, which enables us to ensure that our products are developed further in the interests of our customers and users. We are happy to have you on board! 🙂

The increasing networking and complexity of products means that the number of internal and external requirements is rising simultaneously.
