Mobile working has arrived in public authorities and companies. However, smartphones and tablets can easily pose a risk to IT security and data protection when employees access internal networks while on the move. In addition to traditional communication tools such as email and telephone, they also like to use external tools such as messengers and video conferencing systems. This should be prevented. However, it is not easy to reconcile maximum security, simple administration and user-friendliness. A few points should be taken into account to ensure this succeeds: <\/p>\n
As a rule, companies and public authorities rely on VPN connections when devices are to be integrated into an internal network. This establishes a secure connection between users and the network via public networks, with data traffic being routed through an encrypted tunnel. However, setting up and operating a VPN connection is very time-consuming, as IT often has to manually install a certificate on each smartphone or tablet. As a result, all of the device’s network traffic goes into the VPN and this costs a lot of battery and data transfer power. The situation is different with a container app with its own secure gateway. As only business data traffic flows into the internal network here, both the administration effort and the load on the firewalls are reduced. As the key material for authentication is generated automatically and installed in the app, a container solution is easy to integrate and use. <\/p>\n
Various measures are necessary to guarantee the security of business data on a mobile device. The basis for this is end-to-end encryption of the transmission (data in transit). This ensures that the messages can only be read by the actual sender and recipient. In the second step, the encryption of locally stored data (data at rest) to very high standards plays an important role. Access to this data should be protected at least by PIN or password, and ideally by biometric methods such as fingerprint or facial recognition. As the usual four- to eight-digit PINs are easy to crack, federal authorities use a smartcard as an additional factor. With its own crypto-processor and storage of certificates on a hardware basis, this represents the highest state-of-the-art security anchor. A container solution with an integrated, complete crypto core can drastically increase the level of security. At the same time, it is quick to install and easy to manage. <\/p>\n
