It refers to the protection of personal and business information that is stored on and transmitted from smartphones and tablets.

When it comes to mobile security on smartphones or tablets, there are two things to consider: Data protection (protection of privacy and therefore personal data) and data security (protection against any kind of data loss, manipulation or unauthorized access). In terms of secure communication, mobile devices are exposed to different risks than stationary PCs or laptops, for example.

What mobile risks are there – and how can they be minimized?

Mobile security can only be guaranteed if the potential security risks for companies are known. The biggest risks for mobile security can be summarized as follows:

Missing updates

Operating system

Smartphone updates are often annoying for the user, but are essential to ensure mobile security. They close security gaps and update the operating system as quickly as possible before an attacker can exploit them. However, not all updates are the same; Apple is still ahead of Android in this respect and also provides older devices with updates reliably and quickly. With Android devices, updates may no longer be made available for older devices. You can find more information on this in the blog article “Android Security”.

Apps

Of course, updates are also essential for apps. Software developers are constantly working to track down errors in the applications and fix vulnerabilities. New software versions are regularly released for this purpose, as long as they are apps from trustworthy manufacturers.

How to minimize the risk of “missing updates”: Deny smartphones with outdated or insecure operating systems access to company data. The same applies to apps; only updated apps should be given access to company information.

Use of unauthorized apps

Apps come and go and users are used to just trying out a new app. Whether this is actually secure or complies with the principles of data protection is questionable. Who really reads the privacy policy before installing an app?

Employees should also be made aware of the issue of data protection so that they do not cache business files in their private Dropbox accounts. Many companies underestimate this aspect, but the risk to companies from the use of unauthorized apps is greater than from malware. And at the latest since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force, every company must ensure that personal data does not end up in any app.

You should therefore define exactly which apps may be used for which tasks and communicate this to your colleagues. Access to company data (network, email server, intranet, etc.) may only take place via these defined apps; access from other apps must be blocked.

You can find out about the risks of using unauthorized apps and what you can do about them in the blog article “Mobile shadow IT: 5 tips on how to minimize risks from mobile apps”.

Insecure mobile browser

The mobile browser is one of the most important apps on smartphones. Cyber criminals exploit it for their own purposes and can use it to infiltrate malware and steal data. Employees should therefore only access company information via a secure and updated browser and not click on links from dubious sources. This may result in malware being installed on the mobile device. The keyword here is phishing, which will be discussed in more detail in a moment.

Provide your colleagues with a secure mobile browser for “business surfing”. You can then easily access intranet or browser-based applications.

Jailbreak & Rooting

First of all: both terms describe the same problem. For iOS it is called jailbreaking, for Android rooting. It involves modifying the operating system to install certain functions. This gives the user or attacker access to the end device’s file system and thus root rights, allowing them to deactivate almost all security measures.

Jailbreaking or rooting is quite complex, as iOS in particular does everything it can to prevent it. Therefore, the probability of such an attack is not that high. But if it does happen, the consequences can be all the worse.

As an IT department, you should therefore prevent access to company data from rooted mobile devices.

Lost & stolen devices

Mobile devices are often lost or stolen and therefore fall into the hands of unauthorized persons. If the smartphone is inadequately secured, i.e. has a weak password or no password at all, it is relatively easy for “criminals” to access the data on the device. And as soon as they are “inside” the device, they usually also have access to the cloud, file sharing or networks and therefore access to sensitive data in the company.

Therefore, take precautions and define a guideline for strong PINs for your company-owned devices. If a device is lost or stolen, immediately delete the (company) data on the smartphone remotely. You can also secure company data with a container app that is provided with an additional PIN, making it more difficult for thieves to access company data. You can also access the data within the container app remotely and delete it without having to remove any other content from the device.

Insecure W-Lan networks and man-in-the-middle attacks

Mobile devices now use Wi-Fi connections more frequently than the mobile network. In hotels, on the train, in cafés, free Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere these days. The problem is that most hotspots are not encrypted in order to guarantee users the easiest possible access. In addition, the names of the hotspots can be freely chosen. Fraudsters can therefore use a supposedly well-known name to lure users into their WLAN. This leaves the door wide open to tapping into access data, reading all data traffic or even faking encrypted connections.

The best way to minimize this risk is to use encryption. It should only be possible to transfer company data in encrypted form, for example using a special gateway or end-to-end encryption for emails (S/MIME).

Ransomware, phishing & mobile botnets

Ransomware

Another problem is ransomware, whose perpetrators act according to the motto “give money or lose data”. Ransomware takes control of a device or applications, either by encrypting the files on a device (so-called crypto Trojans) and/or denying the user access to the device (lockscreen Trojans). The user can then pay a ransom to unlock the data. The best-known ransomware is the WannaCry malware program. Ransomware is often spread via email or disguised as an email attachment. It therefore poses a particular risk for mobile devices that are used to quickly check (business or private) emails and do not check links and attachments very carefully to ensure that they are trustworthy.

Phishing

Phishing is probably the biggest security problem on smartphones and tablets. In phishing, fraudsters usually send fake emails with links to online retailers, payment services, parcel services or social networks. Increasingly, these links are also being sent via messenger apps and no longer just by email, posing an even greater threat to mobile devices. If the victim clicks on this link, they disclose their personal access data or automatically start downloads, thereby introducing malware onto a device. Phishing is therefore often the starting point for a cyberattack, as was the case with the Pegasus spyware, for example. There is a greater risk precisely because emails or links are not checked as carefully on a smartphone as on a desktop.

One perfidious variant is HTTPS phishing. The attackers use supposedly secure HTTPS sites with SSL certificates to suggest that their site is secure. The user then senses no danger and enters their data without hesitation. Last but not least, phishing attacks also use single sign-on processes with fake login pages to steal data.

Mobile botnets

Once malware is on the device, a large number of mobile devices can be turned into a botnet without the user being aware of it. Well-known botnets are, for example, Viking Horde or HummingBad. These botnets were originally used to generate ad clicks without the user’s knowledge in order to earn money. However, user details on the device can also be tapped and resold.

You can minimize the risks of ransomware, phishing and mobile botnets by following the tips already mentioned and only allowing access to company data via clean apps. You should also ensure that other apps cannot access company data. You can ensure greater email security by using digital signatures as standard.

Legal requirements

In addition to the IT security risks mentioned above, there are further risks for mobile devices with regard to data security and the GDPR. For example, if an employee also uses an app purchased for private purposes for work-related tasks, this can have far-reaching consequences, as neither data protection, copyright nor retention obligations are guaranteed – and the employer is liable in case of doubt.

The GDPR also stipulates that the personal data of customers, business partners and employees must be protected on mobile devices. Companies must demonstrate and document appropriate protection mechanisms and also take this into account when selecting IT solutions.

Find out more about GDPR-compliant mobile working.

Therefore, create a security policy together with your management and compliance department that defines which information is classified as sensitive and in need of protection.

From an IT perspective, you can minimize legal risks by introducing end-to-end encryption for your digital communication and additionally encrypting data on mobile devices and during transmission. And by clearly separating business and private data, for example with a container solution.

Mobile security – is that even possible?

That all sounds terrible now. Inadequately secured smartphones and tablets are a major risk for companies. Successful attacks can cause immense financial losses and permanently damage a company’s reputation. If companies do not comply with the GDPR’s security regulations, there is also the threat of considerable costs due to fines, even if no attack has taken place.

So shouldn’t employees be banned from working on smartphones and tablets altogether? No, that’s not the right solution either. Smartphones and tablets are part of everyday life today and, when used correctly, they make work more fun and more efficient. Secure mobile working doesn’t have to be complicated either. But it is important to protect mobile systems with a technical solution from the outset.

Mobile security is a very broad term.
