Benefits of native platforms – Part I

Native platform security significantly increases user-friendliness

The BSI has granted approval and permission to use the two secure solutions indigo and Knox Native Solution. This means that, for the first time, companies and authorities can access hardware that has natively integrated security. Read this blog to find out exactly what this means and how these platform approvals affect user-friendliness.

The decision by the BSI (German Federal Office for Information Security) can be described as a technological breakthrough – especially with regard to the EU’s upcoming NIS 2 Directive, which promotes greater cyber security in companies and organizations: as part of the BSI’s indigo (iOS Native Devices in Government Operation) project, the iPad and iPhone, including the iPadOS and iOS operating systems, have been approved for use with classified information. This was followed in August 2024 by the BSI’s approval for the use of Samsung’s Knox Native Solution security concept. The integration of security into mobile end devices can be seen as a huge step towards the ultra-mobile workplace of the future, where the focus is on location-independent and flexible working and a consistent display of software across all devices.

The BSI’s decision to approve and authorize the use of indigo and Knox Native Solution offers a number of advantages for manufacturers, users, authorities, organizations of special public interest and critical infrastructures. For example, user-friendliness increases significantly. If the hardware already offers the required level of security, the software no longer needs to strictly regulate the individual user actions (such as through restricted functions). This means that the security mechanisms in the background are less visible and disruptive for users. The combination of a simple and familiar user interface, low administration effort and optimized performance thus contributes to a smooth user experience.
